TFM™1600 Valve Seat Material


The standard Ball Seats fitted in the NTC High Performance Ball Valve range are manufactured from TFM™1600. Typically most valve companies choose to use either standard PTFE or RPTFE materials for their Ball Valve Seats which would normally satisfy the majority of applications. However, tests have shown that TFM™1600 material has both chemical and physical properties that far exceed that of conventional PTFE and RPTE materials.

So what is TFM™1600? TFM™ 1600 is classified as a homo-polymer under ISO 12086. It is a chemically modified PTFE that fills the gap between conventional PTFE and melt-processable PFA. It has a significantly lower melt viscosity thus giving far better particle fusion during sintering, resulting in a far smoother surface coupled with exceptional chemical and heat resistance properties.

Test results have concluded the following:

  • Deformation under load: TFM™1600 = 4%. PTFE = 10%
  • Reduced void content: The better particle coalescence reduces the void content of TFM™1600 by a factor of almost 2:1
  • Thickness sheet permeation: The coefficient of permeation of TFM™1600 is 40% less than that of PTFE independent of thickness

The advantages of TFM™1600 include:

  • Reduced Cold Flow
  • Substantially reduced deformation under load
  • Lower porosity and permeability due to denser polymer structure and lower void content
  • Improved stress recovery, particularly at elevated temperatures
  • Smoother surfaces, does not score or wear the ball surface as RPTFE would
  • Exceptional non-stick and dielectric properties
  • Higher elastic modulus
  • Improved flexibility

TFM™1600 complies with:

  • 3A Sanitary standard for multiple use plastic materials used as product contact surfaces for dairy equipment
  • FDA-21 CFR 177.1550 direct contact with meat or poultry food products prepared under FDA inspection
  • USP23 Biological test for plastic Class VI
  • WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) listed under “items which have passed full tests of effect on water quality -BS6920”. Listed for use on potable cold and hot water up to 85 deg C.
